The big difference being that there have been four major releases in the past three years, whereas there were four years between v6 and v7. As additional releases and years are added to this scenario, you can see that the annual maintenance model is actually less expensive than paying for individual upgrades. For a user who had purchased DameWare v7 under this model, the total out-of-pocket expense would have been $319 ($199 + $40 maintenance for the 3 years 2012-2014), slightly less than the $329 in the legacy model. The second year's maintenance price, approximately $40, provides unlimited access to all upgrades, major or minor, plus technical support. So the $199 price builds-in the expectation that there will be a major release in the next 12 months. The SolarWinds pricing is based on an annual maintenance model. Under the legacy pricing model, this would have cost a DameWare v7 user approximately $250 in upgrade licensing costs if they upgraded at every release, in addition to the original $79 acquisition license. In fact, since v7 was released in March, 2011, there have been four major releases.
